PROGRAM
- GABRIEL FAURE Cantìque de Jean Racine
- FRANZ SCHUBERT Mass No. 2 in G Major, D 167
- OLA GJEILO Sunrise Mass
Ola Gjeilo’s breathtaking Sunrise Mass (2008) is performed the world over. A spiritual work that is neither sacred nor secular, it reflects life. The four movements take us on a metaphysical journey from the heavens to earth, affirming the cosmos. The musical development of the work evolves from nebulous and pristine to more emotional and dramatic, and eventually to warm and solid—as a metaphor for human development from child to adult, or a spiritual journey from the heavens to the earth. http://olagjeilo.com/albums/sunrise-mass/
Also on the program is Franz Schubert’s popular Mass in G, written in six days when the composer was 18 years old. Although reminiscent of Mozart or early Beethoven, this work is pure Schubert and passages of soaring lyricism abound, flowing with the graceful writing and charming melody for which he is famous.
Opening the concert is one of Gabriel Fauré’s two most beloved works, Cantìque de Jean Racine, the other being his Requiem. Both exhibit the same lush, intense choral writing layered on top of a flowing string accompaniment. Accompanying this and the other two works will be the string orchestra of London Symphonia.
RUN TIME: 70 minutes; no intermission
