The Karen Schuessler Singers presents Strong and Free!
LONDON – The Karen Schuessler Singers celebrate our great country with
Strong and Free! on March 7 at 7:30 pm at Wesley-Knox United Church.
“This wonderful country has much to celebrate. We will travel the route the voyageurs took by canoe as they moved west on our rivers. Join us on our journey across this great land in song, honouring Canada’s beauty and strength, diversity and heart—celebrating the unique country we call home,” says KSS Artistic Director and conductor Karen Schuessler.
Traveling coast to coast to coast with exciting music about Canada, the choir will sing songs from our past and for our future emphasizing the qualities that make Canada unique. Songs written by Canadians, made famous by Canadians, all singing their love for our country.
A very special guest will be well-known Canadian folk artist, Paul Mills. Not only is Paul an accomplished performer, but he has had a stellar career as a music and drama producer for the CBC as well as producing close to 200 record albums, including those of Stan Rogers and Sharon, Lois and Bram, winning several gold and platinum records along with Junos and other awards. He also founded the Borealis Recording Company and The Millstream recording and production company. In 2017, for his contributions to the Canadian folk world, he was named a Member of the Order of Canada. Please read Paul’s bio on the Artist’s page.
Along with Paul’s phenomenal guitar skills, accompanying the choir will be the always excellent Grace Yip on piano and Greg Mainprize on percussion of all types.
The choir will perform an exciting array of Canadian treasures, including, “O Siem” by Susan Aglukark, “Northwest Passage” and “The Mary Ellen Carter” by Stan Rogers, “Mon Pays” by Gilles Vigneault, “In Remembrance” by Eleanor Daley, “Big Yellow Taxi” by Joni Mitchell, “The Hockey Song” by Stompin’ Tom Connors, and more.
For this concert, we are partnering with representatives of the Canadian Armed Forces Reserves in London, including The Royal Canadian Regiment Museum and the 1st Hussars Museum to highlight the theme of the concert, “Strong & Free”.
“As global factions scream louder and louder, Canada can show it’s guiding beam of honouring diversity and valuing inclusivity. This is what peace and a multicultural democratic society can look like. There is nothing so important in our world at the present time. Canada can lead the way. We have an amazing country. Let’s celebrate that!” says conductor Karen Schuessler.

About the Karen Schuessler Singers:
The Karen Schuessler Singers is one of London’s premier concert choirs. Celebrating 33 years of great music, it was founded in 1993 by director Karen Schuessler to explore the wealth of choral music, and that, it certainly has done. The choir has become well known for quality performances and widely varied, accessible and innovative programming.
Each season the choir presents a 3-concert subscription series designed to appeal to all ages and musical tastes. The choir performs choral repertoire not often performed to complement traditional repertoire with music ranging from the classics to jazz to Broadway, and from Medieval to the 21st century.
The vision of Karen Schuessler Singers is to create concerts that are not only entertaining and thought provoking, but that also lift spirits, lighten hearts and deepen souls.
Says Karen Schuessler, “The thrill of live performance, when the audience is open and receptive and the performers are giving from their hearts, is an experience unlike any other. Come join us in this, our final season of great choral music. Sing Joy!”
