SUPPORT THE KAREN SCHUESSLER SINGERS
Your tax-deductible donation will help keep our Karen Schuessler Singers concerts both imaginative and compelling. If you have never given in the past, we would ask you to consider doing so now. If you have given in the past, we thank you, and we hope that you will consider doing so again.
In “À la Carte!” the singers dust off their lighter side as we celebrate the many moods of food— from show tunes to symbols of love, and from the yucky to the heavenly!
Our concert begins with the opening song from the Broadway musical, Oliver!, where everyone is disgusted with the food they get in the workhouse, and they dream of overflowing, glorious food! It’s just that the glorious food they dream about is the wonderful cuisine offered by our fine London restaurants!
Folk songs that ask a riddle have been popular throughout history. However, none are so well known as “I Gave My Love a Cherry”, often called, simply, “The Riddle Song”. This famous song has been sung for 600 years, coming to us from the 1400s. Its beautiful tune has the classic arch shape of a perfect melody.
And finally, the last piece on this whirlwind celebration of food is the popular song from Les Misérables, “Master of the House” (from the 2019 KSS concert, “Schönberg & Sondheim”, with current KSS voices added). With the lengthening days and warmer weather, and after being home for a good long stretch, we look forward to the joys of summer traveling, even if it means camping out at sketchy inns with dodgy innkeepers!
